Climate change and international law - Opinion - Al-Ahram Weekly - Ahram Online

Climate change is the defining global crisis of the world today. Recent humanitarian crises such as droughts, famines, floods, heat waves, natural disasters and sea-level rise, which are either attributable to or exacerbated by climate change, highlight the urgent need for a swift and resolute international response. Such a response should include the collective efforts of all states and their readiness to carry out their commitments in accordance with international treaties and legal principles. In view of the importance of the legal aspects relating to climate change, the UN International Law Commission, of which I am a member, recently examined a number of these issues such as sea-level rise, the protection of the environment in armed conflicts, and the protection of persons in the event of disasters. During the last session of the commission, I seized the opportunity to declare to the meeting that owing to the importance of the COP27 Climate Conference in Sharm El-Sheikh in N...

Andrew Tate's Hustlers University 2.0 Has 200,000 Subscribers - BuzzFeed News

Image
One of the first things you learn in an introductory video for Andrew Tate's "Hustlers University 2.0," his suite of courses that thousands of people pay a monthly subscription fee for, is that his two favorite things seem to be making money and emotional manipulation. "You're in the most fantastic place on the planet for making money, Hustlers University, and the only person who could ruin that is you," the controversial influencer shouts, as he struts in front of his red Aston Martin Vanquish, blue Rolls-Royce Wraith, and white Porsche 911, luxury sports cars with a collective retail value of over $750,000. Dressed in a leather jacket, Tate holds a coffee in one hand and uses the other to gesture at the camera. "Most of you are happy to be losers part time," he declares. "You want to escape. COVID-19 pandemic massively set back learning, especially for high-poverty areas - PBS NewsHour

Image
The COVID-19 pandemic devastated poor children's well-being, not just by closing their schools, but also by taking away their parents' jobs, sickening their families and teachers, and adding chaos and fear to their daily lives. The scale of the disruption to American kids' education is evident in a district-by-district analysis of test scores shared exclusively with The Associated Press. The data provide the most comprehensive look yet at how much schoolchildren have fallen behind academically. The analysis found the average student lost more than half a school year of learning in math and nearly a quarter of a school year in reading – with some district averages slipping by more than double those amounts, or worse. WATCH MORE: Long-term effects of COVID school shutdowns become apparent as students return to class Online learning played a major role, but students lost significant ground even where they returned quickly to schoolhouses, especia...

New Story Collections From T.C. Boyle, Andrea Barrett and Others - The New York Times

Image
Let's get the bad news out of the way first: T.C. Boyle's I WALK BETWEEN THE RAINDROPS: Stories (Ecco, 272 pp., $28.99) is a train wreck of telegraphed punches, labored jokes and liberal sanctimony passing itself off as satire. The turgid, sloppy prose reads as though it was composed with autocomplete enabled. So many sentences rely on constructions such as "That was when," "That was the day," "Then there was" or "suddenly" that the stories grow hard to tell apart, a problem compounded by the fact that all the characters speak in the same quippy vernacular, irrespective of age, race, gender, nationality, education or epoch. Many of the stories address hot-button issues — Covid, incels, climate change, self-driving cars — but evince such cursory interest in their subjects that one wonders whether the author clicked through to read the articles whose headlines apparently set him off. "Dog Lab" and "Big Mary" are both se...

9 Works of Dark Humor Perfect for Halloween - CrimeReads

Image
For anyone who has read my debut novel SIGN HERE, it should come as no surprise that I am a fan of dark humor. My mom is the funniest person I know and watching her, especially together with her three brothers, turned me to the dark side early on, and I never looked back. That's the thing about dark humor. Few simply dabble in it. Either you are a dark humor person, like me and the rest of my family, or you're not. And you can't fake it. While all humor has a punchline, dark humor comes with a one-two punch. The way your audience receives the first punch tells us everything, and usually goes one of three ways. Option A: shock, and then strict disapproval. If you are a dark humor person, this is a good sign to shut down shop. Finish your drink, apologize to the widow, and go home. Option B: concern, and then mollification. Your audience's initial thoughts read as if projected on a jumbo screen: "oh shit, this person is crazy." Then, if they decide you are safe ...

Introduction Massive open online courses (MOOCs) are attaining prompt acceptance as a method for providing education beyond geographical and social boundaries – enabling students to access world-class teaching and educational resources. 1 As such, students who could not afford to travel and pay tuition fees to attend top universities face-to-face are now benefiting the most from online education. Thereby, a further number of benefits have been acknowledged for online education during COVID-19. Precisely, several studies have shown that COVID-19 has had negative effects on students' psychological status worldwide, ie, causing fear, worry, and a sense of apprehension. 2–5 For the following reasons, over 60 million new learners have taken part in MOOCs to avoid COVID-19 transmission. 4 Given that, in the pre-pandemic era, there was no way to control the incidence of dropouts in MOOCs offered by MOOC providers. 4 Researchers discovered that paying fees pushed course completion...
