'Echoes' tells of Iowa's past – Newton Daily News - Newton Daily News 'Echoes' tells of Iowa's past – Newton Daily News - Newton Daily News Posted: 24 Mar 2021 08:10 AM PDT Hollow sounds bounce off the empty hallways as rhythmic footsteps pound the floor inside a dusty building. Long after a school is closed, the memories inside the walls live on in the people who walked those hallways when they were full of chatter. "Echoes in the Hallways: History and Recollections of 102 Closed Iowa High Schools" explores a high school that is no longer in use in all of the 99 counties of the state. In Jasper County, author James Kenyon uncovered past stories from Lynnville High School, which closed in 1956. Kenyon spent the better part of 2019 traveling the state talking to people who graduated from or were related to former graduates of the schools. They met in libraries, parks, kitchen ...

Talking Tolkien: International Tolkien Reading Day is Thursday - The Spokesman-Review Talking Tolkien: International Tolkien Reading Day is Thursday - The Spokesman-Review Posted: 23 Mar 2021 08:03 AM PDT Best known for "The Hobbit," "The Lord of the Rings" and other works of high fantasy, John Ronald Reuel Tolkien was an English writer, poet, philologist and academic. I vividly remember falling in love with J.R.R. Tolkien's work while reading "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy for the first time in high school. It was a whirlwind of an experience, and, for almost an entire summer break, there was hardly anything but Middle Earth on my mind. I don't know exactly how many times I've watched Peter Jackson's first trilogy all the way through, but, to give you an idea of my level of familiarity, when I rewatched the films (somewhat unnecessarily) leading up to writing this article, I found that I coul...

In fact, the prolific Wheeler has written more than 30 epic novels, has sold millions of copies of said novels and even has wound up on some pretty prestigious bestseller lists. We're looking at you, Wall Street Journal. Recently I had the opportunity to "talk" with Wheeler via email about his passion for fantasy, writing and life. Jeanne Huff: Jeff Wheeler, you are the author of more than 30 epic fantasy novels, have sold more than four million copies worldwide and have been on the Wall Street Journal's bestseller list. What or who gave you the writing bug? Jeff Wheeler: I've always...

History of Saranac Lake high schools | News, Sports, Jobs - The Adirondack Daily Enterprise History of Saranac Lake high schools | News, Sports, Jobs - The Adirondack Daily Enterprise Posted: 19 Mar 2021 09:16 PM PDT Well, I'd better qualify that title. This column will not cover the history of the present high school at 79 Canaras Ave. Freshmen students from the former high school at 141 Petrova Ave. entered the new high school in 1970. The last graduating class from the Petrova school was 1969. Now stick with me here … this column was prompted when I heard a couple of young people in Tops Market say, "Hey, that guy will know the answer," came up to me and asked, "Why was Petrova Avenue named Petrova?" I quickly told them the story, and they went on their way. History is so quirky and inaccurate, and so, for the very first time ever, right here in this space we are telling the absolutely straight, honest-to-God s...

20 of the Best Free Short Stories You Can Read Online - Book Riot 20 of the Best Free Short Stories You Can Read Online - Book Riot Posted: 18 Mar 2021 03:37 AM PDT Back in 2012 or so, I discovered FictionPress (the sister site to FanFiction.Net). This was the first major repository of original fiction I'd ever come across, and I was in AWE. Some of the stories on there seemed truly spectacular, and I couldn't believe that I could read it all for free . Okay, I was 12. A lot of the content on there definitely hasn't withstood the test of time. But some of the stories have, and remain a frequent reread for me. Sure, they're often clichéd, but the feel-good fluffiness is undeniable. These are the ones I want to spotlight today, because FictionPress has fallen under the radar somewhat. Its golden age ran from circa 2006 to 2013, but then some plagiarism scandals meant that the most popular stories were taken down. Within a coupl...
