Sportsbooks call them risk-free bets, but customers can lose ... - The Washington Post

Next month, Ohio will become the 32nd state to offer legal sports betting, which is sure to generate a rush of aggressive marketing appeals. But regulators there have issued an unprecedented warning: The industry's standard inducements to new customers are "false, misleading and explicitly against" state law. These enticements are often presented as can't-miss cash giveaways. BetMGM offers Michigan customers a "risk-free first bet" of up to $1,000. Barstool promises Maryland bettors a $1,000 "bonus" for wagering their first buck. In many states, Caesars offers the most generous-sounding deal: a "free bet" worth up to $1,250 if a customer's first bet loses. It takes a lot of brass to undertake writing a contemporary version of Charles Dickens' beloved novel "David Copperfield." And it takes brilliance to pull it off. Barbara Kingsolver has both. Her book is not an imitation but a salute, a work of inspiration, one that shares Dickens' richness of plot and character and his concern with the consequences of grinding poverty and child exploitation, but also overflows with Kingsolver's own exuberant wit and invention. Dickens called "David Copperfield" his "darling," his personal favorite among all his many novels — in part, no doubt, because it's the most autobiographical of his books. "Demon Copperhead" isn't Kingsolver's autobiography, although s...

"Boom and Bust: A Global History of Financial Bubbles" by John D. Turner and William Quinn Amazon In "Boom and Bust," authors Quinn and Turner dive into the history of financial busts to explain the actions investors and speculators took leading up to these crashes. "The authors use creating fire as an analogy to bubbles. Just as fire needs fuel, heat, and oxygen, the necessary elements for a bubble are; excess money, easy liquidity, and speculation. Oftentimes, new technology acts as the spark to set things in motion," said Garrett Aird, Northwestern Mutual Wealth Management Company's vice president of investment management & research. By providing this historical context, the book highlights the three key elements of a financial bubble to help future investors predict an upcoming economic decline.
