screwtape letters :: Article Creator C. S. Lewis Wasn't A Writer Of Fantasy. He Was A Teller Of Hard Truths. Merry Christmas! A day late, I know. Happy "Boxing Day," then. 🥊 Movie buffs may have noticed a curious inclusion in this year's Christmas releases: "Freud's Last Session," an imagined meeting between Sigmund Freud and C. S. Lewis at the outbreak of World War II. Adapted from a 2009 play by Mark St. Germain, the dialogue-heavy movie wasn't doing well with critics as of press time (America's review is forthcoming!), though Anthony Hopkins is winning plaudits for his depiction of Freud (weird coincidence: Hopkins depicted Lewis in "Shadowlands" in 1993). On the other hand, noted an America coworker, "Freud got all the best lines." Then again, so did Screwtape. The clever title character of Lewis's classic The Screwtape Letters was also an expert in psychology, as well as one...

comedy fiction books :: Article Creator 'American Fiction': Asked To Be More Authentic, Author Fakes His Way To Success In A Black Comedy Friday, December 22, 2023 Cord Jefferson works warmth and humor into this satire of race and identity based on Percival Everett's 2001 novel "Erasure." The film centers on African American writer Thelonious "Monk" Ellison (Jeffrey Wright) who, much like Nicolas Cage's academic in "Dream Scenario," can no longer conjure up a note of relevance. No one wants to publish his latest, and instead implore him for something more "authentic." The more concrete reality facing Monk is that his father has just died and his mother (played by the great Leslie Uggams) is struggling with memory challenges and needs full-time care, so after the ashes are spread seaside and mom has been situated, Monk holes up in the family harborside cottage just south o...

He met him at his local McDonald's a few days before Christmas. He'd stopped by for lunch– a cheeseburger and senior coffee with one cream, his usual order. drown short story collection :: Article Creator Impressive Short Story Collections From Two Florida Writers On Veterans Day, Jon Chopan's Veterans Crisis Hotline is a stark reminder of what happens to some soldiers after they return from war. Chopan teaches creative writing at Eckerd College in St. Petersburg. This book, his second collection of short stories, won the 2017 Grace Paley Prize for Short Fiction. Its spare but evocative prose and well-crafted characters make clear why. The collection opens with Crisis Hotline: Veterans Press 1, a story that sets up the other 11. Its narrator begins, "Sometimes, when they call the hotline, they want to talk to another vet. They ask for us specifically. They have this perception that only those who've seen war can understand the suffering born of it. As far as I can tell, this is a myth. It is, to my mind, like asking the criminally insane to cure each other." Despite that jaded cr...
