My View: Working With Inspirational People Creates Life-changing Moments
One Sunday, when I lived in New York City, I volunteered to usher guests to their seats at the United Nations. The gathering assembled, I stood above the cavernous auditorium and witnessed an extraordinary speech by civil rights activist Bayard Rustin.
Gail Fischer has lasting memories of working for Nathan Perlmutter.
His theme that afternoon was that for hundreds of years Americans of African descent drew inspiration from the story of the Exodus from Egypt – the Jewish people's own journey from slavery to freedom. Then the great orator delivered the unexpected.
Rustin suddenly broke into song. He performed a spiritual a capella, his powerful solo resonating with deep and slow intensity, articulating words of truth through music filling an enormous hall. It took my breath away.
At the time I worked for one of Rustin's allies, Nathan Perlmutter, the national director of the Anti-Defamation League (ADL). Located around the corner from the U.N., with a spectacular view of the East River, this was considered Manhattan's most dangerous building to work in. The consulate across the street was the second most likely to be bombed, only because it was so close to ours.

I came to know Perlmutter as a great man. Earlier in his career, gathering intelligence in Florida, he and his wife infiltrated outdoor meetings of the Ku Klux Klan. His beloved Ruthie told me once about the floppy hat she wore to hide an instant giveaway, her metro hairstyle that she called a "bob." The danger of being found out was real.
Even when I was there, Perlmutter walked to work, altering his route for fear of being shot by those who routinely threatened him, but still choosing to walk.
His staff told another story, from very early in his life. His father had abandoned their impoverished family, leaving his mother, who sewed purses in a sweatshop, so devastated that she put her two sons in an orphanage. Within a week, the older son had had enough. During the night he escaped the floor he was assigned, found his way in the dark to his younger brother's room, and whispered, "Come on, Philly, we're getting out of here!" They walked the city streets for hours and went home to Brooklyn.
Perhaps I felt my deepest awe during his last public appearance, at a luncheon in Gracie Mansion when Mayor Edward Koch honored him with the Eleanor Roosevelt Human Rights Award. Dying of cancer, he was brought there in a wheelchair looking ashen, shrunken, silent. Until he rose to speak.
Before the crowd he delivered an impassioned, monumental oration on ending all forms of bigotry, and stood erect with full dynamic vocal power. After his masterful speech concluded, I saw him collapse, sinking barely alive, back down into the wheelchair.
After his death, Perlmutter was given an award by New York City's Jewish Police Union. I was invited to attend the Sunday brunch and wandered among the chairs looking for a place to land. Eventually I was at a table full of strangers, who must have wondered why I was sobbing softly as the tributes began.
"That was my boss," I explained, when Koch took the podium to speak glowingly of his good friend.
"That's my boss," the man next to me said, nodding toward Koch. It was a bond of loyalty and admiration that we both understood.
