Flannery O'Connor's only explicitly Catholic short story has a (very) surprising twist. - America Magazine

Image
Flannery O'Connor wrote only one short story that takes place in a Catholic setting. In it she unites two theological truths, the indwelling of the Holy Spirit in every human being and the presence of Christ in the Eucharist. She also explores an extreme sexual orientation—all within a sometimes hilarious story about an unusual weekend in a mother-daughter household. In "A Temple of the Holy Ghost," a nameless 12-year-old child learns something special about herself when her cousins, two years older, come for a weekend visit from a girls' convent school nearby. At dinner, the cousins are giggling as they call each other "Temple One" and "Temple Two." The mother questions them and learns, amid more giggles, that Sister Perpetua advised them that if a boy tries to take liberties with them, they should say, "Stop, sir! I am a Temple of the Holy Ghost." In her story O'Connor unites two theological truths: the indwelling ...

Review: 'The Council Of Animals,' By Nick McDonell - NPR

Image
Enlarge this image Henry Holt & Co. From Animal Farm to Watership Down , a small yet impactful group of novels has explored the ironies and ideals of being human, by filtering those qualities through the unlikely lens of talking animals. These works by George Orwell, Richard Adams, and others have been unique, but their basic conceits are similar: Although many people view animals as lesser beings, the act of imbuing them with the sentient awareness and social dynamics of Homo sapiens can give us an eye-opening level of disconnect. Animals who act and speak like humans is such an absurd premise, it allows us to poke satirical fun at ourselves — or even recast our flawed heroism in a revealing new light. Nick McDonell's new novel, The Co...

How Wattpad changed the way we think about writing - The Verge

Image
I started reading early, and I spent my childhood hungry for stories. For the first half of my life, I was sustained by my small public library, finding solace in old, ratty copies of Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events and Louisa May Alcott's Little Women. It wasn't until I was 14 that I felt the limits of my library's bookshelves and started to look online for new, brave, curious protagonists. That's when I stumbled onto Wattpad. When I found it in 2012, the site functioned as a microcosm of teen popular culture, reflecting the platform's large contingent of Gen Z and millennial users. Every scroll, regardless of genre, brought users book covers largely adorned with Photoshop edits of notable teenage heartthrobs of the time (think: Dylan O'Brien in his Teen Wolf fame, or a younger, long-haired One Di...

Don't focus on English at the expense of your science Career Column 12 JUL 21 - Nature.com

Image
A Russian interpreter at the United Nations. Gaining English-language skills is useful, but if it gets in the way of your research, it's better to turn to professionals. Credit: Valery Sharifulin/TASS/Getty Most of my 19 years in Russian academia has been spent teaching English to students. But in 2014, my employer at the time, Tomsk Polytechnic University, gave me a new task: delivering full English courses to academics. I've been giving similar courses ever since. My experience of teaching English to Russian academics has shown me how deeply many believe that a language barrier is the main reason their papers do not get published. Most think that improving their English will help to make their academic texts into publishable papers, and so spend time and effort on that. In reality, linguistic competence takes second place to the ability to produce quality scientific content. For editors and reviewers, good science is almost always more important t...

Meet the women of New Bedford's Waterfront: Scientists analyze data to support fisheries - SouthCoastToday.com

Image
NEW BEDFORD — Scientist Kevin Stokesbury pulled up a digital presentation in his New Bedford office at the School for Marine Science and Technology. Across from him sat fisheries consultant Cate O'Keefe with a notepad and pen in hand.  For about an hour, O'Keefe asked Stokesbury (her former doctoral advisor) a series of questions about scallop surveys, the potential impacts of offshore wind development on data collection, and the ways in which survey collaboration could improve.  She will meet with other researchers in the region in the coming weeks for a project with the New England Fishery Management Council — the organization that regulates fisheries in federal waters from Maine to Connecticut. The working group O'Keefe is involved with expects to issue a set of recommendations to improve scallop surveys by next summer, which will ultimately&n...

Review: The Imperfect Power of 'I Am Not Your Negro' - The Atlantic

A novelist, essayist, playwright, and poet, James Baldwin was a writer with an arsenal of artistic talent and moral imagination. His signature style was his prose—startling in its intricate design and depth of perception, and fierce in its determination to dismantle the racial assumptions of the American republic and the English language. Baldwin lent his words and energies also to the civil-rights movement and would write one of the defining books of that era, The Fire Next Time , his 1963 classic . While Baldwin fell out of critical favor in the last decade of his life, and in the years that followed his death in 1987, his work always remained a source of deep and demanding insight and beauty—which is why it's so heartening to witness the national revival he is currently enjoying. This past September, at the dedication ceremony of the National Museum of African American History and Culture, President Barack Obama began his remarks by quoting from Baldwin's short story, "...

Final Fantasy 16 will record English voice over first, Japanese later - Rock Paper Shotgun

Image
In a rare turn of events, it seems a Final Fantasy game has been recorded in English before Japanese. Final Fantasy 16 producer Naoki Yoshida has reportedly said that Square Enix are focusing on English voices with British accents for the upcoming action-RPG. If you've seen the reveal trailer from last year, it makes a fair bit of sense. The game is set in a ye olde fantasy setting, and everyone knows that people only spoke in English accents in medieval times. And of course, we can't forget that very English protagonist, Clive.

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone Getting Re-Released With New Magical Movie Mode - ComicBook.com

Image
Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone will be getting a new home video release with a "Magical Movie Mode." Special features are absolutely nothing new for DVDs and Blu-Rays. But, Harry Potter fans are absolutely rabid in their love for the franchise. So, there will probably be some new information and behind-the-scenes details to love on these releases. On the other hand, the wildest thing about the release from Wizarding World today was the fact we are already 20 years removed from the debut of this movie. No one could have believed that the film series would have ended up being as big of a phenomenon as it became. All of the books were a runaway sensation and Warner Bros. flipped these films into an even bigger hit. It's wild to think about because Harry Potter is a theme park attraction and Halloween costume now. (Heck, it even gets some time in Space Jam: A New Legacy, showing you how important the series is to the studio.) For now, there are no plans for a ...

Based on Arunachal folklore, ‘Bhediya’ not just a werewolf movie - EastMojo

Image
Mumbai:  Horror comedy "Bhediya", headlined by Varun Dhawan, is not just a werewolf movie, says its writer Niren Bhatt who promises to deliver a unique Hindi film of an international standard. The story is, however, inspired by fairy tales and legends from Arunachal Pradesh. The aim is to depict a never-seen-before world to the audience in the upcoming film, said Bhatt, known for films like "Bala" and "Made in China". "'Bhediya' is a visual film. We created so many visuals, this is how the creature would look and this is how the conversion would happen. We have tried to create a film which would stand out internationally in this genre. "The effort was to create something unique and path breaking. It is not a werewolf film, it is a completely different genre that we are trying to define in Hindi cinema," the screenwriter told PTI in an interview.
