Five books to read before they hit the screen – The Daily Free Press - Daily Free Press

Image
It feels like 2014 all over again, with the avalanche of book adaptations for television and movies announced in the past few years. From BookTok recommendations to Barnes & Noble purchases, I know from personal experience that us readers have a long TBR — or to be read —  list. So, if you're looking to know which ones you should prioritize, here are five books to read before they hit the big screen in the near future. "Where the Crawdads Sing" by Delia Owens Delia Owens' "Where the Crawdads Sing" hit the record for the most weeks at #1 on the New York Times Best Seller list for hardcover fiction and is expected to become a major motion picture next summer. The mystery book tells the story of Kya, a young girl who was abandoned by her family in the marsh of 1960s North Carolina and later becomes involved in a murder investigation.  Actress Reese Witherspoon picked up the book for her book club in 2018, only to join the screen

Tales That Linger in Your Mind and Take up Residency in Your Soul - The New York Times

Our crime fiction columnist assesses three riveting new novels and an emotionally devastating short-story collection. As law enforcement across the country undergoes a reckoning, the police novel — a stalwart for 70 years — has entered an uncomfortable stage of transition. The slow timetable of book publishing means we'll have to wait a few more years to see if, and how, this genre will evolve. For now, though, I appreciate Robert Reuland's attempt to grapple with hot-button issues in his new novel, BROOKLYN SUPREME (Overlook, 362 pp., $27). Will Way lives and breathes Brooklyn, and, as an N.Y.P.D. union rep, he spends his days aiding troubled cops — particularly those, like Georgina Lee, who have shot and killed Black teenagers based on outsize in-the-moment fear. The story threads its way through media circuses, internal investigations, conflicts of interest, unexpected court proceedings and surprising links to Way's younger years and lost loves. The resulting panorama, i

‘Bridgerton' author Julia Quinn talks new book — and answers all our questions - Today.com

Corsets, balls and rumored high society romances are back, surely to become the talk of the town — and Lady Whistledown is here to highlight it all in her official guidebook, "The Wit and Wisdom of Bridgerton." Julia Quinn, author of the beloved Regency-set series "Bridgerton," which inspired the hit Netflix show, has encapsulated her favorite quotes, moments, "quips and barbs" from all of the "Bridgerton" characters we love and know best — and she did it more than two decades after the first book's release. "You know, it was fun, both because it had been so long, and also because it was really fun to see the characters through new eyes, because they had now been inhabited by these actors," Quinn said in an interview with TODAY. Netflix The book vs. the show While Lady Whistledown's gossip guide does not reveal any stark new details of the elaborate "Bridgerton" storyline, it does highlight all of the siblings' lov

Technical user story writing for agile teams: A practical guide - TechBeacon

Image
As a new product owner, application programming interfaces (APIs) and technical stories were my weak spots. I struggled for a long time to know where to start, what to include, how to communicate the necessary things to the development team, and how detailed to be. Our team learned these lessons the hard way, but you don't have to. While every development team, environment and product owner is different, these basics should help you get started out on the right foot.  Do your initial research  Getting started with APIs/technical stories can be daunting. There is so much complexity, so many unknowns, and so many things to consider that it's easy to see why folks balk at creating them. But a little research and prep work can alleviate many of the pain points. Not all APIs are the same, and they certainly aren't created equally. Focus your research on finding out these three things. What type of API are you dealing with? There are three diff

Major 'integrated' military exercise underway along western front to hone combat skills - Times of India

Image
NEW DELHI: With integrated theatre commands on the anvil in the country, the Army is conducting a major combat exercise with other forces along the western border in Gujarat and Rajasthan to test new concepts and doctrines for wars of the future. The theatre-level "Dakshin Shakti" exercise, which includes over 30,000 troops from the Army, Navy, IAF, Coast Guard, BSF and intelligence agencies, has led to the "activation of the entire desert, Rann and Creek sectors". The stress during the combat manoeuvres is on the use of new weapon systems and technologies with an "integrated approach" to war-fighting. "It's the largest exercise since the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic. It's designed to validate new concepts and doctrines for integration of the armed forces and border guarding forces in the backdrop of the impending theaterisation process," a senior officer said on Tuesday. "This is the first time that an effective punch of a field t

Book Review: Educated an eye-opening read - Bundaberg Now

Title : Educated Author : Tara Westover Publisher : Hutchinson, London Publication Date : 2018 Genre : Non-Fiction Reviewer : Hayley Martell Bundaberg Regional Libraries Hayley Martell reviews Educated, a story of what happens when you cut yourself off from the only life you know. Where do I even begin with this book? Tara Westover was born at the foothills of the Idaho mountains. Her family did not believe in medical assistance, schooling, or the government, and lived completely off the grid. According to government records they simply didn't exist – no school records, no medical records, no birth certificates. Tara's mother was a midwife and nurse (however, not trained), and her father owned a scrapyard. Tara's father was forever preparing for the End of Days. He had built a bunker and Tara spent her time canning peaches and rotating emergency supplies. One part of the

Explaining Bloody Bible Stories to Children | Adam Lee - Patheos

"Daddy, why is it called Passover?" My son, now 4 years old and overflowing with questions, asked me that the other day. I hesitated over what to say to him. A few years ago, before I became a parent, I would have thought this was an easy question. Most religious stories, even the ones presented as uplifting and instructive, have terrible morals. Jesus' crucifixion reinforces the poisonous myth of original sin and the morally nonsensical idea that one person's misdeeds can be absolved by punishing someone else. The Old Testament's chosen-people theology promotes the dangerous and arrogant notion that there's one race God favors above everyone else. The belief in heaven and hell is a dehumanizing idea which holds that some people deserve eternal torture, and that good people will happily go along with this. And Passover is the culmination of an episode that shows the God of the Old Testament at his most capricious, violent and vindictive, slaughte

Jamie Oliver’s new book offers ‘Ways’ out of pandemic cooking rut - Chicago Sun-Times

Image
NEW YORK — Jamie Oliver knows one of the biggest obstacles home cooks face isn't the drudgery of shopping, the chore of chopping or the mess of washing up. It's delivery apps. What he calls the Uber-ization of the food industry has led to tired families just ordering dinner for delivery or pickup. "It's never been easier to fix that urge for food at the click of a button," he said. Oliver is hoping to inspire home cooks with his 24th book, "7 Ways," which he calls his most reader-focused cookbook yet. He promises maximum flavor for minimum effort. "If I can write a recipe that's delicious and gives you lots of choice and excitement and I know you've probably got the ingredients in your fridge already, that has to be pretty powerful," the English chef said. The book comes during a global pandemic, and Oliver hopes it offers beleaguered home cooks more options. He notes that sales of cooking utensils and baking products have soare
