Teaching in Mandarin and English | Lundquist College of Business - Lundquist College of Business

Starting college is intimidating enough for the traditional freshman. Add to that a language barrier and the pressure of living far from home, and the challenges faced by first-year international students can be doubly hard. Addressing this issue is a pilot program at the Lundquist College, launched fall term, in which one section of the introduction to sports business course was taught in a mixture of English and the Mandarin Chinese language—Mandarin being the second most common language spoken by business students at the University of Oregon after English. The objective of the experiment was to build an on-ramp of sorts for first-year international students to feel more comfortable and be more successful during their time at Oregon. Jordan Luo, a junior at the UO studying public relations, was born in China. He took the sports business course, and he said minimizing the language barrier clearly helped international students feel more confident and stay better engaged in clas

1. Archpriest Avvakum. The Life Written by Himself As part of the Russian Library series by Columbia University Press, a new translation of this very old story has been published. Archpriest Avvakum is the famous 17th century Old Believer who was one of the first to reject reforms in the Orthodox Church and become a dissident. He had previously been a widely admired priest who was close to the tsar. However, that didn't save him from exile and jail.  While even Russians struggle to read this story, written in an archaic language, English readers are lucky to be able to read it more easily in the beautiful translation by Kenneth N. Brostrom.  Read more about Avvakum in our article here, and learn about the origins of the Old Believers here.  2. Alexander Pushkin. The Captain's Daughter. Sanas aims to convert one accent to another in real time for smoother customer service calls - TechCrunch

Image
In the customer service industry, your accent dictates many aspects of your job. It shouldn't be the case that there's a "better" or "worse" accent, but in today's global economy (though who knows about tomorrow's) it's valuable to sound American or British. While many undergo accent neutralization training, Sanas is a startup with another approach (and a $5.5 million seed round): using speech recognition and synthesis to change the speaker's accent in near real time. The company has trained a machine learning algorithm to quickly and locally (that is, without using the cloud) recognize a person's speech on one end and, on the other, output the same words with an accent chosen from a list or automatically detected from the other person's speech. Delaware Online journalists pick their favorite Delaware stories for 2021 - The News Journal

Image
Delaware News Journal Perhaps the best thing we can say about 2021 is that it wasn't 2020.  And while COVID-19 continues to impact everything we do, in many respects we have adapted and learned to live our lives in a new way.  This past year has been interesting – aren't they all? It started with Joe Biden being inaugurated as president and is ending with COVID infections spiking yet again, stressing hospitals and health care workers. In between, there has been a lot of great work done by the journalists at Delaware Online/The News Journal. What follows is their favorite stories of the year. In most cases it is stories they wrote, in some cases it is just their favorite story.  In every case, they are stories only they could bring you, thanks to your support and that of the thousands of new people who subscribed in 2021.  We can't do it without you. And we look forward to 2022 and shar
