Harry Potter Movies Prove Vera Verto Is the Most Useless Spell - CBR - Comic Book Resources
Harry Potter's wizarding world never lacks whims and surprises. From the deadly killing curse Avada Kedavra to Snape's snake vanishing spell to the amusing transfiguration spell that turned Draco Malfoy into a ferret, the franchise has introduced viewers to various fascinating spells. Interestingly, among the various transfiguration spells in Harry Potter films featured, one particular incantation was created exclusively for the film adaptation.
The spell wasn't initially in J.K. Rowling's novel. Compared to other incantations under the same category, its purpose was more amusing than helpful. Enter Vera Verto -- one of the most useless spells in Harry Potter.
What Does Vera Verto Do in Harry Potter?
In short, Vera Verto is a transfiguration spell to turn animals into water goblets. The spell first appeared in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets when Professor McGonagall taught it to her second-year students. In the scene, McGonagall turned a hornbill into a silver water goblet. Ronald Weasley then attempted to practice the spell with his broken wand and turned his rat Scabbers into a hairy water goblet with a tail. However, given that his rat was also Peter Pettigrew in disguise, it was unclear what really caused the transfiguration to go wrong the way it did.
The spell later appeared in the video game Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery. However, in that case, it was specifically used to transform mice into water goblets. It was also mentioned in the book Harry Potter: The Creature Vault and the mobile game Harry Potter: Wizards Unite.
Vera Verto Is a Useless Spell - But It's Not the Only One
Although most spells in the Harry Potter franchise have proven to be quite useful, plenty of them also seem redundant. For example, Morsmordre is a spell that the Death Eaters used to conjure a terrifying, giant Death Mark on the sky in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. Although it seems pretty cool on the outside, that was all there was to the spell. It doesn't do anything other than send a green sign into the sky, which simple fireworks can achieve.
Sectumsempra is one of Severus Snape's original spells. In Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, Harry used it on Draco Malfoy without knowing what it did, which, as seen in the film, ended up with Malfoy covered in blood. However, the only thing that the spell did was slash the enemy with an invisible sword, which seemed cruel and a little uninspired, considering who created it.
