Hulu's TikTok Famous ACOTAR Series May Rival Rings of Power and GoT - CBR - Comic Book Resources

2022 has been a banner year for fantasy streaming. The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power , streaming on Prime Video, is a prequel to The Lord of the Rings , which revolutionized the fantasy genre and promises to again. House of the Dragon , streaming on HBO Max, is a prequel to Game of Thrones , one of the greatest contemporary fantasies. The Sandman , an adaptation of one of the greatest fantasy comics written by one of the greatest contemporary fantasy authors, is currently streaming on Netflix. Noticeably absent from the list of major fantasy streamers, though, is Hulu. In spite of being something of a streaming mecca for television and putting out numerous prestige TV programs, Hulu has largely stayed out of the picture during the current clamor for fantasy. This likely will not last for long, though. Hulu has optioned a number of series, including a particularly prominent one from well-known contemporary fantasy author Sarah J. Maas. The saga is often referred to by th...

Why a Dinotopia Reboot Is Ripe for Modern Television - CBR - Comic Book Resources

Back in the '90s and early 2000s, author and illustrator James Gurney's Dinotopia stunned readers and television viewers with its gorgeous fantasy world and unique combination of prehistoric life and ancient human culture. It breathed life into the imaginings of every 10-year-old and introduced the world to a land unlike any other. It's time to bring Dinotopia back. In recent years, Hollywood has been busy reaching back into iconic franchises of the past and reimagining fully fleshed-out worlds. Since studios have only been going for some of the largest and remaking them, a lot of the more deserving franchises have been left completely untouched. With today's VFX capabilities and the fantasy genre's current place in the mainstream, studios and networks should absolutely be looking at Dinotopia . Does the world need COVID novels? – Harvard Gazette - Harvard Gazette

Image
The pandemic may not be over, but pandemic fiction is off and running. Among the COVID-shadowed novels that have hit the shelves in the past year and a half are "Our Country Friends" by Gary Shteyngart, in which eight friends spend lockdown in a house in upstate New York; "Summer," the last novel in a quartet by Ali Smith; and Louise Erdrich's "The Sentence," which is haunted by both illness and a ghost. These works and others, steeped in the isolation and loss of the pandemic, have revived old questions about the challenges and rewards of bringing real-life drama into fiction in real time. Worry not, says Valeria Luiselli, a visiting Harvard professor and acclaimed novelist whose books include "The Story of My Teeth" and "Lost Children Archive." A novel, she says, is just a slice of a time. "In that sense, it offers but one layer of a historical narrative that only comes to view much, much later, and once many, many, many ...

Raises Ongoing Concerns About Fraying of Free Expression and Jailing and Silencing of Writers (NEW YORK)—As India marks 75 years of independence today, 102 notable U.S. and international writers and creative artists, including Marina Abramovic, Paul Auster, J.M. Coetzee, Jennifer Egan, Jonathan Franzen, Azar Nafisi, and Orhan Pamuk, joined PEN America and PEN International in signing a letter to Indian President Droupadi Murmu, raising concern over the deterioration of free expression and calling for the release of imprisoned writers and dissident and critical voices. "As India celebrates 75 years of independence, the state of free expression is under grave threat and is being mourned rather than celebrated," said Karin Deutsch Karlekar, director of Free Expression at Risk Programs at PEN America. "We are relieved that the conditional release of poet Varavara Rao was made permanent on medical grounds this week, but other writers and public intellectuals including...

The Citizen Recommends: Learning to Become a Writer Who Makes a Difference - The Philadelphia Citizen

Image
Readers of The Philadelphia Citizen are solutions-oriented people. Tackling problems requires effective communication. And yet many, even those who are highly educated, inappropriately feel inadequate when it comes to putting words on paper. Why? They are imprisoned by misunderstandings of what writing is and don't realize that every intelligent person can achieve goals through written communication. Too often, one's lack of confidence gets in the way. Insecurity about writing is sometimes the result of misguided instruction. As a scholar and a founder of writing across the curriculum, I will say that in the last 40 years we have significantly reformed the teaching of writing at all educational levels. But we still have a long way to go. When I was a full-time English professor and seat-mates on planes would ask about my profession, I would hesitate, then say, "I teach English." Their response was likely to be something like, "I'll have to watch my gramma...

The 10 Best Love, Death & Robots Episodes So Far, Ranked - CinemaBlend

Image
There are many great anthology TV shows to watch or stream right now, but I believe there is only one at the moment that deserves to be called, not necessarily "the best," but the "perfect" anthology series. One that features episodes that almost any type of audience can enjoy — whether they prefer action, horror, comedy, romance, and, most importantly, science fiction — and offers a stunningly unique visual experience each time. I believe Love, Death & Robots (also one of Netflix's best sci-fi TV shows) fills that void with flying colors. Created by Deadpool helmer Tim Miller and executive produced in part by Academy Award nominee David Fincher, this multi-Emmy-winning Netflix original is a collection of short animated films (most of which are adaptations of acclaimed short stories) that, typically, have something to do with the three titular subjects. Each of the 36 episodes released so far boast breathtaking animation, captivating voice acting, and ...
